BOma luncheon features address by
poER’s john heatley Orlando, FL – June
20, 2007 – POER Senior Consultant John Heatley was the
featured speaker at the June monthly luncheon of the Orlando
Chapter of the
Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA).
Heatley’s speech was entitled, “Understanding the Florida
Property Tax System.”
Florida voters will decide in January, 2008 whether to keep
their current residential tax caps and levels or switch to a
super exemption worth up to $195,000 for a $500,000 home.
Unfortunately the new law does little to help commercial
property owners who have seen their tax bills rise
astronomically over the past four years. Commercial property
owners do not enjoy the same tax cap or exemptions as
homesteaded property owners and therefore are not protected
from rising assessments from an overheated market.
Heatley explained that a thoughtful proactive tax strategy
is a must in order to navigate the current tax system. If
you are one of those owners who “wait and see” then you are
already behind and at a disadvantage in the process.
